Apartment in Pisa

The apartment is located in a building from 1960s, in a middle-class district, city of Pisa (Tuscany). The former arrangement of rooms was expression of the living habits from the age when the building was constructed. The rooms were sorted for outdated living rituals: entrance – kitchen – pantry – "salotto" and a clear separation between areas for the day and night.

First and foremost we "made space", focusing on simplification of the space. This means not the simplification of spatial rituals, rather than the reduction of spatial boundaries. This work on empty space finds its counterpoint in the adoption of the figure-ground perception theme as a method of architectural element's arrangement. It is possible to see that looking at the marble block arrangement in relation to the furnished wall behind. In the living room strictly defined observation points are not privileged, promoting instead the continuous variation of body's relations within architectonical elements.

The space is organised by a functional element that includes kitchen's furniture and services, arranged as an independent block. This block hosts, in the backside, some hidden service rooms. The work on materials and colors - brushed and grey lacquered ash wood - emphasize the perception of the block, completed by a  worktable with a legible mass.
